Convivial Spaces
Description:
This Studio Assignment started with individual cases studies. My case study was Phillip Johnson's Four Seasons restaurant in New York. The initial study of the restaurant and material investigations lead to my final "Convivial Space" named the Coral Bar and Cafe, that much like the Four Season; created areas of disorientation, and a place where the materials created an atmosphere to see and be seen.
Case Study
Material Investigation
Below: A Series of Material Investigations were initially created using various materials. The materials that were most promising, as pictured, were Multi-colored paper cupcake liners cast in plaster. These initial investigations lead to metal (gold) liners being cast in a similar manner.
The Final Material Investigation
The final Material investigation was later the inspiration for the final projects Reflected Ceiling Plan. Much like the metal light fixtures in Philip Johnson's "Four Seasons" a metal light fixture inspired and guided the design process.
Left: This drawings intended to be read as a single "surface", as if the space had been unfolded and laid flat. The case study began with recreating plans, elevations, and RCP of the original space, and studying the activity, movement, function, and other features.
Below: Diagrams showing a study of light, inventory of the materials, furnishings, and influences of the 4 seasons and the time of day.
